At GDC, iPhone game development breaks out

If you had any doubts that the iPhone must now be considered one of the world’s most important gaming platforms, this week’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco will try to put them to rest once and for all.

For years, GDC, as it’s known, has hosted two days of “summits” early in the week, before the main keynote address and the bulk of the panels and sessions begin, including the longstanding GDC Mobile, which dealt with just about every issue a developer could want on mobile and handheld devices.

And this year is no exception. Starting Tuesday, the GDC Mobile/Handheld summit will begin, offering 18 discussions on things like “bootstrapping games on Android;” “Creating augmented reality experiences on Nintendo DSi;” “Social networks: The new marketplace for mobile games?” and more. There’s even one called “Get your iPhone game to 2,000 other devices.”

100Mbps broadband may be closer than you think

If you’re looking forward to a future of streaming movies, gargantuan Internet file exchanges, and other high-bandwidth activities, cheer up. Broadband service providers in most of the major markets around the country will soon be able to deliver 100 Mbps broadband service with no problem. That’s enough to download a music album in as little as 5 seconds, an hour-long TV show in about 30 seconds, and a high-definition movie in roughly 7 minutes 25 seconds. But it’s going to cost you.

This should make the Federal Communications Commission’s goal of getting 100Mbps service to 100 million homes by 2020 an easily achievable goal. Several weeks ago, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said he is making the 100 Mbps to 100 million homes goal a part of the National Broadband Plan that will be presented to Congress next month.

Costco will begin accepting food stamps

Costco Wholesale Corp. said yesterday that it would start accepting food stamps from the 36 million Americans that use them at its warehouse clubs nationwide.

That is a reflection that food-stamp use has hit new heights.

The rolls of food-stamp recipients nationwide have grown by 10 million over the past two years. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said nearly 200,000 retailers nationwide now accept food stamps, 20 percent more than in 2005.

In Hawaii, food-stamp recipients grew in number by 23 percent in the year ending in June compared to the previous year and included more than 125,000 residents.

With rental stores closing, DVD kiosks, subscriptions see growth

LAS CRUCES — In the past two-and-a-half years, three Blockbusters and one Movie Gallery within the city shut their doors for good, while video kiosks and movies-by-mail services continue to increase.

Redbox and other video rental kiosks and Netflix, the video-by-mail subscription service, continue to cut into the $8.15 billion video rental market. According to estimates from Adams Media Research, a California video research firm, video stores have about 60 percent of that market.

Michael Arrington, an analyst for Adams Media Research, said he expected the entire video rental market to remain at the $8-billion-plus level for the next several years.

Democrats looking hard at 51-vote shortcut for health reform

Washington (CNN) — Several senior congressional Democratic sources told CNN after Thursday’s bipartisan summit that Democrats’ plans on health care are not likely to differ much Friday from what they were Wednesday.

Although their public stance will be to let the dust from the summit settle, Democrats are actively looking into using the parliamentary shortcut known as reconciliation to get a health care bill to the president’s desk, the sources said.

They are specifically exploring two issues: The ins and outs of how the complicated process could work, and whether the votes are there in the Senate and House to execute this strategy.

HIMSS privacy and security workshop tackles new ARRA rules

ATLANTA – At the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) annual conference on Sunday, HIMSS Senior Director of Privacy and Security Lisa Gallagher kicked off an all-day workshop Sunday on how providers can prepare for the potential impact of privacy and security under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued a proposed rule on Jan. 13 that would allow providers to earn incentives for the meaningful use of healthcare IT.

Though the rule has a lot to say about how providers should collect and use health data, the rule says very little about privacy and security other than providers must “conduct a security risk and assessment,” Gallagher said.

Intel to introduce faster Atom chip Monday

Intel plans to release a faster version of its “Pine Trail” Atom processor for Netbooks on Monday, bringing a little extra performance to this popular segment of the laptop market.

Major PC makers are expected to announce new products or product refreshes with the new processor, the N470, which will be identical to the current 1.66GHz N450 but get bumped to a speed of 1.83GHz, according to a source familiar with the announcement.

Every little speed increase helps, as Atom processors, compared to their mainstream chip cousins, have always been performance-constrained. Intel uses a different chip architecture for its Atom processors that delivers better power consumption efficiency but lower performance, compared to mainstream Core 2 and Core i series mobile processors. And Atom processors used in Netbooks–smaller-than-usual laptops typically priced lower than $350–are almost always single-core, compared to the faster dual-core processors used in mainstream laptops.

Google searchers can now refine their search results based on location, the company announced Friday.

The new “Nearby” feature is available in Google’s Search Options panel. It defaults to users’ current location, which can be further refined to include their city, region, or state.

Why Google Wants a Faster Internet

There was no lack of, well, buzz about Google’s new Buzz social-media platform last week, but more important were a series of moves that suggest the search giant is ready to take a tentative step toward fixing one of its longest-held gripes: the speed of Internet connections in the U.S.

In a blog post on Feb. 10, Google product managers Minnie Ingersoll and James Kelly laid out the company’s plan to provide as many as 500,000 people in a small number of locales with fiber-optic Internet connections capable of one gigabit per second (Gbps), more than 100 times faster than the typical U.S. broadband connection speed today.

Major new app store to take on Apple, others

(CNN) — Some of the world’s largest telecommunications companies have teamed up to create an apps store of sorts that they say will rival Apple’s and those of other smartphone makers.

AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and 24 other companies have formed what they’re calling the Wholesale Applications Community, they announced Monday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

The store will be designed to encourage developers to create mobile and online applications for all smartphones and operating systems, according to a written release from the GSM (Global System for Mobile) Association, which hosts the conference.

BlackBerry rolling out Twitter application

(CNN) — BlackBerry has introduced its official Twitter application, offering users of the most popular smartphone brand a feature on the rival iPhone that they now can only covet.

On its official blog, Research In Motion, which owns BlackBerry, said it has begun sending out a limited number of invites to test Twitter for BlackBerry.

“The Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones application has been designed to take advantage of the BlackBerry platform to create a user experience that will be familiar to both Twitter and BlackBerry smartphone users,” reads the official Inside Blackberry blog.

Endeavor astronauts install node on space station

(CNN) — Astronauts from the space shuttle Endeavour completed their spacewalk outside the international space station early Friday — the first of three scheduled for their two-week mission.

Bob Behnken and Nicholas Patrick installed the new Italian-built Tranquility node and a seven-windowed cupola onto the Unity node of the international space station, NASA said.

The hatch into the new addition of the station is scheduled to be opened about 9:15 p.m. Friday.

CPOE challenging, but once done, physicians ‘never go back’

WASHINGTON – Implementing a computerized physicians order entry system poses multiple challenges, with physician engagement at the top of the list.

“It is a complex and involved process,” said Leah Binder, CEO of the Washington, DC-based Leapfrog Group. “It involves a wide variety of clinical staff and you need to integrate with other systems. Also, the provider needs a CDS (clinical deicision support) system that alerts physicians to potential errors, which there are a lot of.”

Implementing CPOE is a major requirement for Stage 1 meaningful use eligibility. Meaningful use Stage 1 requires providers to submit at least 10 percent of all orders using a CPOE system.

Patients say docs going digital

SAN FRANCISCO – About 48 percent of patients in a recent survey said their doctor was using an electronic health record during their most recent visit to their physician.

A little more than 30 percent of survey respondents said their doctor was still using paper charts and notes in a folder and 11.8 percent did not know or remember.

The report, which was conducted by GfK Roper, a division of GfK Custom Research North America, for San Francisco EHR provider Practice Fusion, surveyed 1,000 adults nationwide.

HITRUST makes updates to Common Security Framework

FRISCO, TX – The Health Information Trust Alliance has updated the HITRUST Common Security Framework (CSF) to reflect new regulations and user experiences.

The 2010 version of the CSF reflects updated requirements and references to the HITECH Act interim final rule, the addition of certification control requirements, and improved tools and templates to apply the CSF to an organization or system, as well as other enhancements based on industry feedback, said officials.

The HITRUST Common Security Framework Assurance Program provides healthcare organizations and their business associates with a common approach to managing security assessments. The program leverages the HITRUST CSF, a comprehensive security framework that incorporates the existing security requirements of healthcare organizations, including federal, state, third party (e.g., PCI and COBIT) and other government agencies (e.g., NIST, FTC and CMS).

Military joint EHR office rapped for bad planning

WASHINGTON – The Government Accountability Office criticized the group directing the project to tie together the electronic health record systems operated by the Defense and Veterans Affairs departments in a recent report.

GAO said the VA-DOD Interagency Program Office (IPO) needed to improve its planning and scheduling – and specifically its ability to create a master plan for the project – if the project is to succeed.

GAO also pointed out several project management basics that the program office needed to work on, including creating an integrated schedule of projects and conducting performance assessments to measure progress of those projects.

First U.S. stem cells transplanted into spinal cord

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) — For the first time in the United States, stem cells have been directly injected into the spinal cord of a patient, researchers announced Thursday.

Doctors injected stem cells from 8-week-old fetal tissue into the spine of a man in his early 60s who has advanced ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It was part of a clinical trial designed to determine whether it is safe to inject stem cells into the spinal cord and whether the cells themselves are safe.

ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that causes the deterioration of specific nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord called motor neurons, which control muscle movement. About 30,000 Americans have ALS at any given time, according to the ALS Association.

Washington (CNN) — Nervous Democrats debated Wednesday how to save a health care reform plan suddenly pushed to the brink of defeat by an upset GOP Senate win in Massachusetts.

Senator-elect Scott Brown’s victory in one of the most progressive states in the nation raised already-high anxiety levels among Democrats looking ahead to midterm elections. It also stripped Democrats of their 60-seat Senate supermajority, giving Republicans enough votes to block any measure in the chamber.

Complaints rolling in about Google Nexus One

(Wired) — Google’s Nexus One phone may have been one of the most anticipated devices of the last few weeks. But since the smartphone’s launch last Tuesday, it has left a string of unhappy customers in its wake.

Nexus One has been plagued by consumer complaints including spotty 3G connectivity, a high early termination fee, poor customer support from Google and problems with the touchscreen.

“There are some aspects of the experience that Google didn’t think through as carefully as they should have,” says Charles Golvin, an analyst with Forrester Research.

But are times changing? Will technology prove its worth following the disastrous Haiti earthquake?

“Slacktivism” has become the popular pejorative to describe the various Internet petitions, well-intentioned Facebook groups and copious retweets intended to sow the seeds of change or bring help where it’s needed. “It’s all fed by slacktivism … the desire people have to do something good without getting out of their chair,” Monty Phan wrote in a 2001 Newsday article.
