Businesses Profit from the BP Cleanup

Michigan’s depressed economy nearly toppled Grand Rapids-based awning maker Prestige Products. Then in April, the company’s fortunes changed dramatically when executive Brian Rickel got a phone call from an old contact at BP (BP). It was 10 days after BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig had exploded, and BP needed help containing the gush of oil. Six weeks later, Prestige has rented a factory, filled it with millions of dollars of new equipment, and hired 74 workers (it employed only six as of April). Using material similar to the vinyl in awnings, Prestige is churning out 12,000 feet a day of booms, the floating barriers that help contain oil slicks. Prestige hopes to double its output—if it can hire 50 additional workers.

Goldman Sachs Said to Ask More Time for Lawsuit Reply

June 18 (Bloomberg) — Goldman Sachs Group Inc. asked for more time to respond to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s April 16 lawsuit accusing the firm of defrauding investors while selling mortgage-linked securities, said two people with direct knowledge of the matter.

The company submitted the request today to the judge overseeing the case, asking for an extension until July 19, the people said. The original deadline was June 21, court documents show. The SEC consented to the New York-based firm’s proposed extension, according to one of the people.

iPad has Wi-Fi problems, some users say

(CNN) — Users who rushed to snap up Apple’s iPad are complaining within days of the slate computer’s highly anticipated release that they’re having trouble connecting it to the Internet.

On Apple’s technical support Web site, there were 11 pages of comments Tuesday morning on a post saying Wi-Fi connections were weak or kept cutting out.

Comcast prevails over FCC in Web traffic fight

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — A federal appeals court in Washington ruled on Tuesday that the FCC does not have the authority to stop Internet service provider Comcast from interfering with its customers’ file sharing.

Tuesday’s court decision is the latest volley in a legal fight dating back to 2007, when Comcast subscribers realized that the company was hindering their ability to use peer-to-peer applications like BitTorrent to swap files that consume large amounts of bandwidth.

What’s Google planning for Chrome 5?

After a year and a half, Chrome has come a long way toward matching the features of better-established browsers. Now, with version 5 coming together, a lot of Google’s work focuses on advancing the state of the browser art.

The new Chrome 5 is available in beta now for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, not that most Chrome users will ever have to know the version number if Google has anything to do with it. Chrome versions are called “milestones”–fleeting waypoints along an unfinished journey to a better browser. But what exactly will moving into the rear-view mirror once Chrome 5 is finished?

Twitter pokes at Facebook’s marketing future

Facebook is squaring off with Twitter once again for the attention of the social media world, and we’re about to see one heck of a marketing land grab. A new Twitter home page, designed to make the site friendlier to new users, debuted recently.

There have been all sorts of strange little revelations about Facebook popping up all over the Web recently: earlier this week, a bunch of documents that Facebook was distributing to advertisers, explaining the company’s forthcoming language change in on-site marketer materials from “Become a Fan Of” to simply “Like.” Previously, there had been a report that Facebook’s ‘like’ button will be unleashed to the Web at large.

A new look at spam, by the numbers

Some news from Twitter this week could leave you with the impression that spam is becoming a dinosaur of the Web.

As of February, slightly less than 1 percent of posts on the micro-blogging site were unwanted spam, according to a blog written by Twitter’s chief scientist, Abdur Chowdhury.

Not too long ago, spam was more rampant on the site, according to an info-graphic published by Twitter. In August of 2009, for example, nearly 11 percent of all Twitter posts were spam.

So, maybe this means we’re getting past the era of computer-generated messages and malicious and trickster ads?

Remote health management market is growing fast, but reimbursement lags

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The remote health management market (RHM) is the smallest, but fastest growing segment of the home health management (HHM) market, according to global strategy consulting firm, Scientia Advisors. But to reach its full potential health insurers must broaden their reimbursement practices to encourage greater physician adoption, the firm says.

Harry Glorikian, Scientia Advisors’ managing partner, says many physicians are reluctant to embrace RHM because government and private health insurers reimburse only for its use in specific disease states or rural populations.

GE Healthcare targets physician practices with MedPlexus deal

BARRINGTON, IL – One of the bigger names in electronic medical records and practice management software is targeting small, independent physician practices with a new acquisition.

GE Healthcare announced Wednesday morning the acquisition of MedPlexus, Inc., a Sunnyvale, Calif.-based developer of EMR/PM solutions for independent clinical practices. Officials at GE Healthcare, the Barrington, Ill.-based, $17 billion subsidiary of General Electric, plan to add MedPlexus’ ambulatory EMR and hosted practice management and revenue cycle management software to the company’s Centricity line.

Emdeon to bolster payer offerings with HTMS deal

NASHVILLE, TN – Emdeon is boosting its portfolio of service offerings to payers with the planned acquisition of Healthcare Technology Management Services.

The Nashville-based provider of claims clearinghouse and revenue cycle management services announced Tuesday that it plans to pay $8.5 million in cash and $2.5 million in stocks for HTMS, an Indianapolis-based IT consulting firm focused on serving health insurers. Additional cash payments over the next three years based on performance could push the deal to as high as $14 million.

Feds received 2,700 comment letters on meaningful use and standards rules

WASHINGTON – The comment period on the proposed meaningful use rule and the interim standards final rule closed Monday. On Wednesday, federal officials said they had so far collected some 2,700 comment letters.

Steve Posnack, a policy analyst with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology said ONC received 700 comment letters on the standards interim rule. After reviewing them, ONC found that only 300 of them were “relevant,” Posnack said Wednesday at a meeting of the HIT Policy Committee.

Cerner news cheers investors

Cerner Headquarters, Kansas CityKANSAS CITY – Analysts are bullish after the investors meeting held Thursday by Cerner, the Kansas City maker of EMR and CPOE systems.

“Overall we walked away with a greater level of conviction that Cerner ‘gets it,’ and will continue to gain marketshare in a rapidly evolving industry,” wrote Piper Jaffray research analysts Sean W. Wieland and Mohan A. Naidu, who reiterated their “overweight rating” and $98 price target for the health IT giant.

The pair were encouraged by the growth that could be afforded by ARRA funding – monies disbursed both to Cerner itself and its provider clients – noting that the company “still expects to see a lot of opportunities from the stimulus. Specifically, their base of customers should receive about $8 billion in stimulus funds, and the company expects to see about $2 billion of this.”

Drummond Group in EHR testing for the “long term”

AUSTIN, TX – Officials at Drummond Group, Inc., announced on the company’s blog that after a “thorough review” of the recent notice of proposed rule making, it will apply this year to become an Office of the National Coordinator-Authorized Testing and Certification Body (ONC-ATCB).

In Nov. the Austin, Texas-based interoperability test lab said that it hoped to extend its testing program to electronic health records and planned to apply once the ONC released its requirements for certifying bodies for EHRs.

On the DGI blog company officials said, “Receiving the HHS requirements to become an authorized EHR testing and certification body was the missing piece in our decision to move forward. Now that we have that piece, we feel confident in announcing our intention to formally apply.”

At GDC, iPhone game development breaks out

If you had any doubts that the iPhone must now be considered one of the world’s most important gaming platforms, this week’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco will try to put them to rest once and for all.

For years, GDC, as it’s known, has hosted two days of “summits” early in the week, before the main keynote address and the bulk of the panels and sessions begin, including the longstanding GDC Mobile, which dealt with just about every issue a developer could want on mobile and handheld devices.

And this year is no exception. Starting Tuesday, the GDC Mobile/Handheld summit will begin, offering 18 discussions on things like “bootstrapping games on Android;” “Creating augmented reality experiences on Nintendo DSi;” “Social networks: The new marketplace for mobile games?” and more. There’s even one called “Get your iPhone game to 2,000 other devices.”

100Mbps broadband may be closer than you think

If you’re looking forward to a future of streaming movies, gargantuan Internet file exchanges, and other high-bandwidth activities, cheer up. Broadband service providers in most of the major markets around the country will soon be able to deliver 100 Mbps broadband service with no problem. That’s enough to download a music album in as little as 5 seconds, an hour-long TV show in about 30 seconds, and a high-definition movie in roughly 7 minutes 25 seconds. But it’s going to cost you.

This should make the Federal Communications Commission’s goal of getting 100Mbps service to 100 million homes by 2020 an easily achievable goal. Several weeks ago, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said he is making the 100 Mbps to 100 million homes goal a part of the National Broadband Plan that will be presented to Congress next month.

Costco will begin accepting food stamps

Costco Wholesale Corp. said yesterday that it would start accepting food stamps from the 36 million Americans that use them at its warehouse clubs nationwide.

That is a reflection that food-stamp use has hit new heights.

The rolls of food-stamp recipients nationwide have grown by 10 million over the past two years. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said nearly 200,000 retailers nationwide now accept food stamps, 20 percent more than in 2005.

In Hawaii, food-stamp recipients grew in number by 23 percent in the year ending in June compared to the previous year and included more than 125,000 residents.

With rental stores closing, DVD kiosks, subscriptions see growth

LAS CRUCES — In the past two-and-a-half years, three Blockbusters and one Movie Gallery within the city shut their doors for good, while video kiosks and movies-by-mail services continue to increase.

Redbox and other video rental kiosks and Netflix, the video-by-mail subscription service, continue to cut into the $8.15 billion video rental market. According to estimates from Adams Media Research, a California video research firm, video stores have about 60 percent of that market.

Michael Arrington, an analyst for Adams Media Research, said he expected the entire video rental market to remain at the $8-billion-plus level for the next several years.
