Democrats looking hard at 51-vote shortcut for health reform

Washington (CNN) — Several senior congressional Democratic sources told CNN after Thursday’s bipartisan summit that Democrats’ plans on health care are not likely to differ much Friday from what they were Wednesday.

Although their public stance will be to let the dust from the summit settle, Democrats are actively looking into using the parliamentary shortcut known as reconciliation to get a health care bill to the president’s desk, the sources said.

They are specifically exploring two issues: The ins and outs of how the complicated process could work, and whether the votes are there in the Senate and House to execute this strategy.

HIMSS privacy and security workshop tackles new ARRA rules

ATLANTA – At the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) annual conference on Sunday, HIMSS Senior Director of Privacy and Security Lisa Gallagher kicked off an all-day workshop Sunday on how providers can prepare for the potential impact of privacy and security under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued a proposed rule on Jan. 13 that would allow providers to earn incentives for the meaningful use of healthcare IT.

Though the rule has a lot to say about how providers should collect and use health data, the rule says very little about privacy and security other than providers must “conduct a security risk and assessment,” Gallagher said.
